First Things Consider When Looking at Caravans for Sale

Before diving into the different types of caravans available, it’s important to consider a few key factors that will help narrow down your options.

If you want to caravan with your kids or grandkids, then you’ll need a family caravan, often called bunk caravans. These family caravans will usually feature a queen bed with 2, 3 or 4 single bunk beds. The bed orientation can either be east west or north south. If you’re a solo traveller or travelling with your spouse, then you’re after a couples caravan, which usually features a queen or king bed.

After deciding between a bunk caravan or a couples caravan, think about the size of the caravan that suits your needs. The biggest influencing factor for a size of your caravan is your tow vehicle. It’s crucial to ensure that your car is capable of safely towing the caravan you choose. You will need to check the weight ratings of both your car and your caravan, such as the braked towing capacity of your car, gross combined mass (GCM) of your car, the gross tare mass (GTM) and aggregate tare mass (ATM) of the caravan. You’ll also need to think about the amount of storage and living space you’ll need, and whether you will be happy with a bed in east west orientation or north south orientation. North South orientation is often more popular, as each person sleeping can get in and out of bed without interrupting the other person. We have a range of caravan sizes, including our Tracker 15ft 6 caravan, Nomad 17ft caravan, Explorer 18ft 6 caravan, Royale 19ft 6 caravan, Dreamer 20ft 6 caravan, Escape 21ft 6 caravan & Roamer 22ft 6 caravan!

Budget is another important factor to consider. Determine how much you’re willing to spend on a caravan, including any additional costs such as insurance, maintenance, and storage. This will help you narrow down your options and find a caravan that fits within your financial means.

Lastly, consider your travel plans and destinations. Will you be traveling on well-maintained roads or venturing off the beaten path? The type of terrain you’ll encounter will influence the type of caravan that’s best suited for your adventures.

Types of Caravans For Sale

When it comes to choosing a caravan, there are various types to consider, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

1. Touring Caravans: These are the most common type of caravans and come in a range of sizes and layouts. They typically feature a bedroom area, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a living space. Touring caravans are ideal for those who prioritise space and comfort and plan on spending most of their time at caravan parks.

2. Pop-Top Caravans: Pop-top caravans are similar to traditional caravans but feature a retractable roof section. This design allows for easier towing and storage, as well as reduced wind resistance. However, due to the pop-top nature of the caravan, it usually features canvas which has reduced insulation and acoustic properties, as well as having to set up every time.

3. Off-Road Caravans: If you’re planning to venture off the beaten path and explore rugged terrain that Australia has to offer, consider an off-road caravan. These caravans are specifically designed to withstand rough conditions and feature reinforced chassis, heavy-duty independent coil or airbag suspension, and robust construction. Off-road caravans are perfect for adventure seekers who want to go off-grid.

4. Hybrid Caravans: Hybrid caravans are lightweight and easy to tow, making them a popular choice for solo travelers or couples. Despite their smaller size, these caravans still offer all the essential amenities, including a kitchenette, a bathroom, and a comfortable sleeping area. Hybrid caravans are great for those who value mobility and convenience.

5. Motorhomes: Motorhomes are built inside or on a van, such as Fiat Ducato, Iveco Daily or Mercedes Sprinter. They are either built inside the van (known as a panel van) or on top of the back, known as a cab chassis van. They will often feature a bed, kitchen, seating area as well as a shower and toilet. While it’s not typically in the same category as a caravan, we thought we’d throw it into this list as they are often considered by those looking to explore Australia on the road.

At Grand City Caravans, we don’t have every type of caravan for sale, we specialise in and have motorhomes, touring caravans, and off road caravans for sale.

Features to Look for in a Caravan

When evaluating different caravans, it’s important to consider the features that will enhance your overall caravan experience.

1. Layout and Interior Design: Look for a caravan that offers a layout and interior design that suits your lifestyle. Consider the lounge shape, such as L shape, straight, cafe or club lounge. Each layout has it’s pros and cons, but that’s something we’ll dive into it in another blog post! You’ll also want to consider the extent of kitchen facilities, such as whether the caravan has an oven or only a cooktop, as well as whether it has a microwave or not. Another consideration for the bathroom area is whether it’s a separate shower and toilet or a combined shower and toilet (wet bathroom). A well-designed interior can make a significant difference in your comfort and enjoyment on the road.

2. Storage Space: Ample storage is essential for long trips. Look for caravans that offer plenty of storage compartments, both inside and outside. This will allow you to pack all your essentials and keep your living space organised and clutter-free.

3. Electrical System & Battery: Think about whether you need AGM or Lithium batteries for your caravan. If you’re looking at frequenting mostly caravan parks with a little bit of off grid caravanning, then AGM will suit your needs fine. If you want to spend multiple days off grid as well as use your appliances such as your aircon or hair dryer, then consider lithium batteries with an inverter system. Did you know we now offer Victron Energy – one of the best off grid electrical system for caravans? You can read more about what we offer, by clicking here.

4. Safety Features: Look for caravans that prioritise safety. Features such as anti-sway technology, electronic stability control, reverse camera and reliable braking systems can greatly enhance your towing experience and ensure a safer journey. All Grand City Caravans feature electronic stability control or sway control, reverse camera and reliable braking systems.
